New Relic gives account owners and admins access to subscription usage data for New Relic products. This document explains how the subscription usage UI works, and how you can query and retrieve the usage data you need.
Understand your usage
Owner and Admins
New Relic's subscription usage system provides account admins and owners with a UI display of how much a New Relic product is being used, and how that usage might affect an account's subscription level and pricing. For example, you can:
- See how much sub-accounts/departments are contributing to billable New Relic usage for purposes of doing IT chargebacks.
- You have an Insights Pro subscription and want to know how close you are to going above your subscription level.
Use these resources to help you understand your product usage:
- View Usage UI pages to get an overview of your New Relic product usage.
- Download usage data CSVs and use other UI features.
- Run NRQL queries in Insights or use Insights query API calls to retrieve focused usage data.
View usage data in UI
Only the account Owner and Admins can view the usage UI. However, anyone in your account can query usage data using the
NrDailyUsage Insights event.
To view New Relic subscription usage data:
- From rpm.newrelic.com, select the account dropdown, and then select Account settings.
- Select Usage for an overview of your usage across all products.
- To view usage for a specific product, select a product's Usage page..
Every New Relic product has its own unit of measurement used to calculate usage. For example, Insights tracks the number of events, and Mobile tracks monthly active users. Aside from the unit of measurement, the UI charts and features are similar for all products.
For product-specific usage UI and calculation details, select a product:

|Switch time range||Use the Time picker to switch between the view of the data from the current calendar month and the data from the last 30 days. All measurements of time in the UI use Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).|
|Switch to different account levels||Select Scope to to switch to different account level views, if applicable, such as customer partnerships, master accounts, and sub-accounts.|
|Download CSV||On product-specific usage pages, select Download CSV to get a comma-separated value file. The columns and data in the CSV will match the data shown in the UI.|
|Group data||On product-specific pages, the default chart view is organized by Account name. You can use Group by to switch to other ways of grouping your data, such as by application or host.|
|View query in Insights||Hover on a chart and select [fa-ellipsis-h]. Then select View query. You will have an option to View in Insights.|
|See chart segment details||For charts with multiple segments, hover over a segment to display more details.|

Usage charts in the UI have an associated NRQL query that, when run in Insights, is close to what you see in the UI. See View query for how to view any chart's NRQL query.

Use the Insights API
The usage-related APIs below were released July 10, 2018. If you used older REST API calls to query usage data, see the transition guide for procedures to switch to the Insights API.
You can use the Insights query API to retrieve your subscription usage data. The Insights query API lets you retrieve any data stored in Insights, including usage data, by using a NRQL query string.
Before using the Insights API, you must create a separate API key. This key is not the same as ones for other New Relic APIs.
