No data appears: .NET Framework app not using TLS 1.2

|View as Markdown (English)

Problem

You installed the .NET agent for a .NET Framework application, but no data appears in New Relic. The agent log contains an error like one of these:

  • NewRelic ERROR: Unable to connect to the New Relic service at collector.newrelic.com:443 : System.Net.WebException:
The request was aborted: Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel.
  • NewRelic ERROR: Unable to connect to the New Relic service at collector.newrelic.com:443 : System.Net.WebException:
The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send. ---> System.IO.IOException:
Received an unexpected EOF or 0 bytes from the transport stream.
  • NewRelic ERROR: Unable to connect to the New Relic service at collector.newrelic.com:443 : System.Net.WebException:
The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a receive. ---> System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception:
The client and server cannot communicate, because they do not possess a common algorithm.

Solution

New Relic requires TLS 1.2 or higher. The .NET agent uses whatever TLS protocols your application is configured to use, so the fix is to make your application use TLS 1.2.

Check which protocols your application uses

Beginning with .NET agent version 10.6.0, the agent logs the protocols your application is configured to use at INFO level when it connects to New Relic. For example:

Current TLS Configuration (System.Net.ServicePointManager.SecurityProtocol): Ssl3, Tls
  • SystemDefault, or a list that includes Tls12, means your application is configured for TLS 1.2. If the connection still fails, check that TLS 1.2 is enabled in Windows.
  • A list without Tls12, such as Ssl3, Tls, means your application isn't configured for TLS 1.2. Use one of the fixes below.

Fix the problem

Choose the fix that fits your situation:

Cause

The .NET agent runs inside your application's process and connects to New Relic with the same .NET networking classes your application uses. It uses the same TLS protocols as your application, and you can't configure a different TLS version for the agent alone.

Older .NET Framework defaults don't include TLS 1.2, so an application that targets an older framework version, or an ASP.NET application without httpRuntime targetFramework, can't connect to New Relic. Applications built on .NET (formerly .NET Core) use the operating system's TLS settings and aren't affected.
