License key

The New Relic license key is a 40-character hexadecimal string that we provide when you sign up for a New Relic account. We use license keys to differentiate your account from others. Every type of account has one (regardless of your subscription).

When you install a New Relic agent, you specify your license key so that the agent can send data to your account. A valid license key allows your agent to send data to our platform.

To prevent unauthorized access to your data, treat your license key securely.

View your license key

Owner, Admin, and Users

To view the license key for your New Relic account:

  1. Sign in to your New Relic account.
  2. From the account dropdown in the New Relic UI, select Account settings.
  3. From the Account information section on the right side of the Summary page, copy your license key.
  4. When prompted during installations or updates to your agent, paste your license key.

For applications monitored by New Relic Browser, you can also view your app ID and license key from the Browser Settings page.

Keep your license key safe

Your license key uniquely identifies your applications and infrastructure on the New Relic platform. Given its importance, you should treat it like a password.

If your license key falls in the wrong hands, an attacker could send fake metric data to your account, triggering false alerts or contaminate data so that you can no longer detect issues in your applications.

To secure your license key:

  • Store your license key in an environment variable instead of hardcoding it in configuration files.
  • Scan your code for license keys on a regular basis, using tools like Git Secrets or truffleHog.
  • Use a secret sharing tool, like Vault or CyberArk.

Change your license key

Under most circumstances, you should never need to change your New Relic license key. If your license key has been compromised, get support at
