  • In the distributed trace view, added service color legend to describe what color maps to what service.
  • In the trace view, added client span overlay to server span for easier detection of clock skew and network or transport time.
  • Visual improvements to the waterfall visualization to better display deeply nested traces.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed an issue where navigating to the distributed trace page with a server filter selected resulted in an error.
  • Fixed an issue where the service name in a deployment marker hover over appeared as undefined.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented filtering by span name if the span name contained a backslash.
  • Fixed an issue where span detail charts would not load if the span name contained a backslash.

  • In the distributed trace view, added “Anomalous spans detected” indicator that shows a count of anomalous spans found in the trace. Clicking the indicator opens a list of anomalous spans for easy navigation.
  • In the distributed trace view, anomalous spans are now highlighted in the waterfall view with an icon.
  • Added histogram chart in the span details panel.

  • A new condensed trace view helps you quickly understand the service-level call flow.
  • You now have the option to turn on in-process spans in the trace view. Previously, these spans were not displayed and were only accessible via Insights queries.
  • More trace view improvements: unique color coding per service, child span count is viewable when the parent span is collapsed, icons to represent span type.

  • In the trace view, clarified span counts by adding Total span and Spans displayed counts on waterfall view with tooltips to define those terms and a link to docs for additional information.
  • In the span details view, the span name links to its respective APM feature for additional detail. For example, a database span links to the "Databases" page in APM. The same cross-feature linking connects Transaction spans and External call spans to their respective pages in APM.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue that was preventing the scatter chart from displaying correctly in Safari 10.
  • Fixed display issues in IE 11

  • New Relic’s distributed tracing feature gives you visibility into how requests travel across a modern distributed system.
  • It is available for APM Pro and equivalent subscriptions. It is currently available for these APM agents and agent versions:
    • Java: 4.3.0 or higher
    • Node.js: 4.7.0 or higher
    • Python: 4.2.0.100 or higher
    • Ruby: 5.3.0.346 or higher
  • Distributed tracing collect Span event types. These are queryable in Insights.
