Added max_procs configuration option to specify the number of logical processors available to the agent. Increasing this value can help to distribute the load between different cores. Default value is 1. If value is set to -1 then it will try to read the environment variable GOMAXPROCS. If that variable is not set then the default value will be the total number of cores available in the host.
Added ignore_system_proxy configuration option to make the Agent ignore the environment variables HTTP_PROXY and HTTPS_PROXY

Security Update

A security update for the Windows Infrastructure agent corrects an issue where the agent may execute privileged binaries in the system path. Security bulletin NR18-11.

Improvements

Add override_hostname and override_hostname_short configuration options, to disable hostname resolution and setting directly these values. Documentation available here.

Bug fixes

Fix errors with https values on the proxy configuration option. More information can be found in the troubleshooting guide.
Fix 'error resolving entity identity' errors in log.
Fix some hosts reporting localhost as full hostname.

PR-50 Fixed inventory deltas submission for remote (non host) entities. This fixes inventory errors showing up on the log for DEBUG level with message error field deltas not in expected order: have delta ID XXX, want YYY.

Context

Inventory deltas are JSON diffs and they need to be applied in order aiming to provide a consistent state. Both the infrastructure agent and the New Relic database stored their latest delta ID received/submitted.

This delta ID is incremented in each plugin entity inventory submission to New Relic. When these IDs go out of sync between agent and platform, the latter provides its latest known ID for the given inventory plugin and entity. Then a reconciliation process is run by the agent for that plugin so that the next ID will match the one expected by New Relic.

Root cause

For remote, non-host entities the agent side didn't store delta IDs on a per-entity basis as the New Relic database did. This means that for a given inventory plugin or integration providing more than 1 entity there'd be delta ID order issues, which were only seen on agent's DEBUG level (verbose mode > 0). At some point all data would usually be submitted as reconciliation process attempts to fix this. But for high load integrations producing multiple remote entities this reconciliation process would be triggered every time an entity needs to be submitted as for each of them platform keeps a record, while the agent recorded ID on a per-plugin basis. Therefore, for high-load integrations, the agent reconciliation process might enter in race-condition loop when trying to fix the delta IDs.

Fix

This release fixes this behaviour by keeping track of delta IDs in the same way as the New Relic database does (or a per-plugin, per-entity basis).

As state might be stored on disk for inventory deltas, if any integration had it persisted before the fix it'll take a reconciliation run per entity to fix agent's locally stored IDs. In this case you might still see some log entries, but they'll be gone during their first submissions.

Processes metrics can be enabled for new accounts

By default, the Infrastructure agent doesn't send data about the operating system's processes. The agent still collects such data, unless metrics_process_sample_rate is set to -1.

The sending of processes data to New Relic can be manually enabled by setting enable_process_metrics to true. To fine-tune which processes you want to monitor, configure include_matching_metrics or exclude_matching_metrics.

Accounts and subaccounts created before July 20, 2020 have enable_process_metrics set to true by default; this can be overridden by setting a different value in the config file.

Agent daemon notification

For notifying the agent to perform actions, the newrelic-infra-ctl command was created. It has the sole responsibility of sending a notification to the agent process that's running inside the host.

In Linux this communication happens via POSIX signals. newrelic-infra-ctl first tries to find if there is an agent process running. If it finds it, it checks if the process is running inside a Docker container. This is because signals to Docker containers are sent with the docker kill command. Once it knows the pid and the signaling method to use, it sends a SIGUSR1 signal to the agent. The agent just has to set a signal handler for when it receives a SIGUSR1.

In Windows, things are a little different. The only signals that we could send to the process were exit signals. In Windows processes communicate by sending messages to their respective windows, but you might be wondering (as I was), the agent is a daemon process so it doesn't have a window. The solution, easy, a hidden window. On startup the agent creates a hidden window, and sets a handler that listens for messages that arrive in that window. newrelic-infra-ctl finds that windows and sends messages to it.

Starting with version 1.70.0, the New Relic Infrastructure agent now automatically collects metadata for VMs running in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). The agent collects the following details:
- displayName
- host.id
- oci.availabilityDomain
- oci.region
- oci.compartmentId
- oci.shape
- oci.imageId
You can use this metadata as tags for entity search or as attributes in NRQL queries. The host.id attribute is also used by the New Relic Cloud Integration for OCI to attach cloud metadata to the correct host entity.

This feature is enabled by default to ensure consistency with existing metadata on other cloud providers. If you need to disable this feature, you can use the configuration settings disable_cloud_metadata or disable_cloud_instance_id.

Background: For many years already, New Relic Infrastructure Agents installed on a VM running in AWS, Azure or GCP had the equivalent metadata detail collection, and this behavior is enabled by default. For consistency across different clouds, the OCI feature is using the same configuration items and the same default behavior.

Now the Infrastructure agent, when running on Linux, can collect Docker container metrics like CPU, memory, I/O and network. This feature is enabled by default for all supported Linux OSs. Please, ensure the host meets the requirements.
The new integration config files now support the when section. It allows you to control the execution of an integration if a given file exists. Here's an example:

The agent will execute ssh-integration only if the /var/run/sshd.pid file exists.

Bug fixes

Agent service wasn't stopping / restarting properly on upstart-based Linux distributions.
In Integration config files: Dollar symbols were unintentionally being expanded into environment variables. Before, pa$$word would have been expanded to pa${}${}word; this behavior has been corrected.
Improved NFS support. Read and write bytes per second were not being correctly set to 0, resulting JSON marshalling errors.

Bug fixes

Fixed a bug from the new integrations' engine added in the version 1.8.0, which caused any JSON line larger than 64 KB to be ignored. This does not affect to the integrations that are configured with the format prior to 1.8.0, which is still supported.
Fixed ${config.path} replacement in new integrations' configuration file. When an integration configuration contained a config or config_file_template section and the ${config.path} variable was used in an environment variable or command-line argument, the correct path was set only during the first execution, remaining the same for the rest of executions, even if the path changes.
Fixed Linux packaging metadata.
- Updated the Vendor field from "<jenkins@401c99d99b5f>" to "New Relic, Inc.", fixing the problem that some customers where having on SLES v11.2 Suse, or higher, due to the "repository vendor stickiness", which protects apps from accidentally replacing stable versions of installed packages with experimental versions from a different repository when updating.

Bug fixes

Updated bundled nri-docker integration version to v1.1.1.
- This version fixes missing Docker container metrics improving Linux cgroup path detection. This issue happened when cgroup was not mounted in the standard path /sys/fs/cgroup. Now it can discover different cgroup paths.
- Still cgroup PIDs (process and thread count) is not available on Kernel versions lower than 4.3 see support. Therefore column threadCount won't be available for these systems. For instance Amazon-Linux v1 runs on kernel 4.13.
Fixed permissions to /tmp/nri-integrations directory while updating the agent from root mode to privileged or unprivileged mode.
- This changes the owner of the /tmp/nri-integrations folder, which is used by some integrations and the Infrastructure integrations SDK to cache data.
Fixed issue when running in Kubernetes where an integration configuration change provided by ConfigMap wouldn't be picked up by the agent, breaking the hot config reload feature for integrations.
