Create and update key transactions

In New Relic APM, you can make a transaction a key transaction when you want it to have a custom level of monitoring, or its own alert policy. This documentation will describe how to create key transactions and change their settings.

For basic information on how key transactions work, see key transaction basics.

Access to this feature depends on your subscription level.

Create key transactions

There are two ways to create a key transaction:

From the key transaction index:

  1. Go to rpm.newrelic.com/apm > Key transactions to view the key transactions index.
  2. Select Track a key transaction if this is your first key transaction, or else Add more.

From a specific transaction page:

  1. Go to rpm.newrelic.com/apm, then select either Overview page or the Transactions page.
  2. Select a transaction.
  3. Below the transaction title, select Track as key transaction.

For most New Relic agents, a key transaction can be any type of transaction (for example, a background process). For the PHP, Node.js, and Go agents, a key transaction can only be created for a web transaction.

Rename a key transaction

To rename a key transaction:

  1. Go to rpm.newrelic.com/apm > Key transactions.
  2. From the index, select the gear gear icon for the key transaction you want to rename.
  3. Enter a new name for the transaction.

  4. Select Save.

Change Apdex settings

You can set a custom Apdex threshold for a key transaction. This is useful if the transaction is expected to be faster or slower than other transactions.

To change a key transaction's Apdex threshold:

  1. Go to rpm.newrelic.com/apm > Key transactions.
  2. Select the gear icon for the transaction you want to edit.
  3. Enter a new value in seconds under the Apdex T heading.
  4. Select Save.

The Apdex threshold affects how transaction traces are created. For more information, see Traces for key transactions.

Create alert policies

You can set an alert policy for a Key Transaction. For more information on this, see Key transaction alert policies.

Delete key transactions

Owner, Admins, or add-on managers

To delete a key transaction:

  1. Go to rpm.newrelic.com/apm > Key transactions.
  2. Select the gear gear icon for the key transaction you want to delete.
  3. Select Stop tracking.

New Relic automatically deletes any associated alerts and events for the deleted key transaction.
